IPL Therapy for Dry Eye — Intense Pulsed Light Treatment in West Yorkshire
Finally, a treatment that gets to the root cause of your dry eye
If you've been using eye drops for months or years with little lasting relief, you're not alone. Most dry eye stems from a problem with the oil-producing glands in your eyelids — and drops alone can't fix that. IPL therapy is a clinically proven treatment that targets the underlying cause, not just the symptoms.
We offer IPL at our specialist dry eye clinic in Cleckheaton, serving patients across West Yorkshire and beyond.
What is IPL Therapy?
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. It's a light-based treatment originally developed in dermatology and now widely used in specialist eye care for a condition called Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) — the most common cause of dry eye disease.
During treatment, carefully controlled pulses of light are applied to the skin around the eyes. This does two important things:
- It reduces the abnormal blood vessels that drive inflammation around the eyelids
- It gently warms the meibomian glands, improving the quality of the oily layer of your tear film
The result is a more stable tear film, less inflammation, and eyes that feel and function better.
Who is IPL for?
IPL works best for patients with:
- Evaporative dry eye caused by MGD
- Ocular rosacea
- Blepharitis associated with skin redness or rosacea
- Chronic dry eye that hasn't responded well to drops or warm compresses
IPL is most effective on skin tones from Fitzpatrick Type I–IV. At your initial assessment we'll confirm whether IPL is the right treatment for you — and if a different approach would work better, we'll tell you honestly.
What does the evidence say?
IPL is one of the most researched treatments in dry eye care. Multiple clinical studies have demonstrated improvements in meibomian gland function, tear film stability, and patient-reported symptoms following a course of IPL treatment.
Research by Stonecipher et al. and others has shown that combining IPL with meibomian gland expression produces significantly better outcomes than either approach alone. At our clinic, we follow this combined protocol as standard.
We're always clear with patients about what the evidence shows — IPL produces meaningful improvement for most patients with MGD-driven dry eye, but it's not a single cure. A course of treatment followed by maintenance sessions gives the best long-term results.
What happens during a session?
IPL is straightforward and well-tolerated by most patients.
Before treatment You'll have a full dry eye assessment first, including meibomian gland imaging, tear film analysis, and a review of your symptoms and history. This ensures IPL is appropriate for you and gives us a baseline to measure your progress against.
During treatment You'll sit comfortably while protective shields are placed over your eyes. Light pulses are applied to the skin below and around the eyes. Most patients describe a mild warmth or brief flicker of light. The treatment itself takes around 15 minutes.
Immediately after, we perform meibomian gland expression — gentle manual clearance of the glands while they're warm and responsive. This step significantly improves outcomes.
After treatment You can return to normal activities straight away. Some patients notice mild redness around the treated area for a few hours. Sun protection on the treated skin is advised for a few days.
How many sessions will I need?
Most patients start with a course of four sessions, spaced two to four weeks apart. Many notice improvement after the second or third session, with the full benefit becoming clear over the weeks following the final treatment.
After your initial course, periodic maintenance sessions — typically every six to twelve months — help sustain the results. We'll guide you on what's right for your situation based on how you respond.
IPL at our clinic
Our lead clinician, Steve Dando, has over 20 years of clinical experience and holds a Professional Certificate in Glaucoma. He has personal experience of IPL treatment himself, which informs how he explains the process and what patients can realistically expect.
Every IPL patient at our clinic receives:
- A comprehensive dry eye assessment before treatment begins
- Meibomian gland imaging before and after your course
- Combined IPL and gland expression as standard
- A personalised treatment plan and follow-up care
- Honest, evidence-based advice throughout
We're an independent specialist practice. We don't offer IPL because it's profitable — we offer it because the evidence supports it and our patients benefit from it.
Frequently asked questions
Is IPL painful? Most patients find it very comfortable. You'll feel warmth and see flashes of light, but it's well-tolerated. We'll check in with you throughout.
Is it safe around the eyes? Yes. Protective shields are placed directly over the eyes throughout treatment. IPL is applied to the surrounding skin only.
How soon will I notice a difference? Some patients notice improvement after one or two sessions. For most, the clearest benefit comes after completing the full course and in the weeks that follow.
Can I wear makeup? Please arrive without makeup on the day of treatment. You can reapply after your appointment.
Will it work for me? We'll be honest with you at assessment. If IPL isn't the right fit for your dry eye type or skin tone, we'll tell you — and we'll discuss what would work better.
