About Dry Eye Disease

.

What is dry eye disease? Dry eye disease is a condition in which the tear film — the thin protective layer covering the surface of the eye — is either insufficient in quantity, poor in quality, or both. It causes a range of symptoms from mild irritation to significant discomfort, and can affect vision quality as well as comfort.

How common is dry eye? Very common. It's estimated to affect around one in four people in the UK to some degree. Many have never had it properly diagnosed or treated.

What causes dry eye? The most common cause is meibomian gland dysfunction — a problem with the oil-producing glands in the eyelids that leads to rapid tear evaporation. Other contributing factors include age, hormonal changes, screen use, contact lens wear, certain medications, systemic conditions such as rosacea and Sjögren's syndrome, and previous eye surgery.

Why do my eyes water if they're dry? Watery eyes are a very common symptom of dry eye disease. When the ocular surface becomes irritated from dryness, it triggers a reflex tearing response — flooding the eye with watery tears that don't contain the oils needed to stabilise the tear film. The underlying dryness remains.

Is dry eye serious? For most people it's a chronic but manageable condition rather than a sight-threatening one. However, significant untreated dry eye can cause corneal damage over time, and the impact on daily life — affecting work, sleep, screen use, and driving — should not be underestimated.

Can dry eye be cured? For some patients with a single identifiable and reversible cause, symptoms can resolve completely. For most, dry eye is a long-term condition to be managed rather than cured. With the right treatment approach, symptoms can be very significantly reduced and quality of life restored.

About Our Assessments

Do I need a referral to book? No. You can book directly with us — no GP or optician referral is needed.

How long does an assessment take? Please allow 45 to 60 minutes. We don't rush appointments.

What does a dry eye assessment involve? A full assessment includes a detailed symptom review, meibomian gland imaging, tear film analysis, lid margin examination, and a review of your findings and treatment options. See our Book an Assessment page for full details.

Will I need to have my eyes dilated? Not as part of a standard dry eye assessment. You'll be able to drive afterwards.

What should I bring to my appointment? A list of your current medications, any eye drops or lid care products you use, your glasses if you wear them, and any previous eye reports if you have them.

How much does an assessment cost? Please contact us directly for current pricing. We'll always be transparent about costs before you commit to anything.

About Our Treatments

What treatments do you offer? We offer IPL therapy, LLLT (red and blue light therapy), ZEST eyelid treatment, and NuLids. A QMR/Rexon-Eye service will be available shortly. Full details are on our Treatments page.

How do I know which treatment is right for me? That's what the assessment is for. We don't recommend treatments before we know what's driving your symptoms. After a thorough assessment we'll explain your options clearly and recommend what we genuinely believe will help.

Are your treatments painful? No. All of our treatments are well-tolerated. IPL involves brief flashes of warmth. LLLT is comfortable and relaxing — most patients find it pleasantly warm. ZEST involves gentle mechanical cleaning of the lid margins. NuLids is a mild exfoliation sensation. We'll talk you through what to expect before any treatment begins.

How many treatment sessions will I need? This varies by treatment and by individual presentation. Most treatment courses involve four sessions. We'll give you a clear indication at your assessment based on what we find.

Can I have more than one treatment? Yes. Many patients benefit from a combination of treatments — for example IPL and LLLT together, or ZEST followed by LLLT. We'll recommend the combination that makes clinical sense for your presentation.

How quickly will I see results? Some patients notice improvement after one or two sessions. For most, the clearest benefit comes after completing a full course and in the weeks that follow. We'll set realistic expectations at your assessment and monitor your progress throughout.

Will I need ongoing treatment? Dry eye is a chronic condition for most patients. After completing an initial treatment course, periodic maintenance sessions — typically every six to twelve months depending on the treatment — help sustain results. We'll advise on what's appropriate for your situation.
